祖籍浙江温州,生于台湾。早年求学于台湾及香港,后读取英国伦敦大学药理学学士、免疫药理学博士及博士后。1986年至2020年,他在剑桥大学药理学系担任讲师、副教授及血管新生和天然药物实验室主任、硕士、博士、博士后导师。2011年受聘为台湾中国医药大学讲座教授;2015年受聘为西北大学、陕西省“千人计划”特聘教授。
       因深受传统中医药的熏陶,樊台平博士曾代表英国皇家学会、外交部与英国贸易投资总署到中国进行学术交流及考察。2006年至今,他当任中医药全球化联盟(Consortium for Globalization of Chinese Medicine, CGCM. www.tcmedicine.org)的英国分会联合主席。2009年,他成为欧盟第七框架计划中医药研究专项副协调员,研究全球医药法规与功能基因组学对中医药学发展的影响。他先后担任欧盟中医药规范研究学会(www.gp-tcm.org)秘书长(2012-2014),候任会长(2015-2016),会长(2017-2018),财长(2019-),率领学会专家组致力与欧洲药品质量管理局EDQM合作,拟将300种中草药纳入《欧洲药典》。2017年6月,华大基因农业应用研究院联合广西药用植物园、深圳国家基因库等机构共同发起“药用植物4.0计划”,致力于充分挖掘药用植物这一重要战略资源的潜在价值,为打造千亿万元中医药民族医药产业服务。樊博士受邀成为“药用植物4.0计划”欧洲地区协调员;同时也受国际标准化组织中医药技术委员会(简称ISO/TC249)之邀,参与更多建立中医药国际标准的工作,促进大健康以及社会经济效益。
       樊台平博士担任世界中医药学会联合会(WFCMS)理事会主席团执行委员(2017-2022),中药新药创制专业委员会常务理事(2022-)。受聘为中国医学科学院中国协和医科大学血液学研究所、香港浸会大学中医药学院及华大基因学院荣誉教授,同时在多所国内外大学任客座教授。受邀在国际学术会议、世界知名大学、研究机构及制药公司进行讲座、及学术报告500余次,包括英国、法国、德国、奥地利、比利时、捷克、丹麦、希腊、意大利、卢森堡、荷兰、葡萄牙、瑞士、俄罗斯、中国大陆港澳台、日本、韩国、菲律宾、新加坡、澳大利亚、加拿大、美国。
       1997年,樊博士创办并担任血管新生杂志Angiogenesis主编8年(2020影响因子9.596);2004年,他首次发现并报道了人参皂苷具有双向调节血管生成的作用;2006年,樊台平受邀在第15届国际药理学大会(IUPHAR)做主题报告,借助“君臣住使”配伍法则,阐明了中医药在现代药物发现中的独特优势。(注:4年一次的IUPHAR大会是全球药理学界规模最大、学术水平最高的国际会议。每次只邀请国际20位杰出专家进行重点报告)
       历时30余年,樊台平在炎症、免疫药理及天然药物药理学机制的前沿领域,取得了多项原创性和系统性的成果。他联合英国、美国、荷兰、中国、港、澳、台湾的学者及团队承担及参与英国、中国等国际合作课题20余项,参与国际发明专利2项。以血管内皮细胞和分子机制研究,探讨了人参、丹参、当归、远志等提取物及中药复方(如麝香保心丸、丹参滴丸、当归补血汤等)对血管生成的作用机制。在Nature Reviews Drug Discovery(2022影响因子112.288),Science(2022影响因子63.714),Circulation (2022影响因子39.918),Trends in Pharmacological Sciences(2022影响因子17.638),Angiogenesis(2021影响因子10.658),Cancer Research(2022影响因子13.312),PNAS(2022影响因子12.779),British Journal of Pharmacology(2022影响因子9.473)等杂志发表研究论文、文献综述及其他著作150余篇,被引用9700余次;“H指数”=46。
       近10年来,樊台平会同西北大学郑晓晖教授带领“生命效应分析科学”团队,以“良关系”之“君-使药对”及现代中西医药“整合-结合-融合”的“合策略”为研究思路,致力于心脑血管、老人痴呆症、癫痫创新药物的创制研究。IDHP(丹参素异丙酣)是专注于缺血性心脑血管疾病防治的1类化学新药,它可显著提高治愈率,减少患者痛苦,与现今市场同类药物相比具有明显原创优势、价效优势,可使更多受众(患者)从自主原创的新药中受益。樊博士联合无锡江南大学蔡宇杰教授,通过功能酶的定点修饰技术和微生物改造,发掘高活性天然产物及其衍生物转化关键酶系及生物合成模块构建高效细胞工厂,系统研究转化过程中的酶催化机制及其微生物合成路径,高效生物合成或酶法转化生成具有抗肿瘤、降血糖、降血脂等高值高活性天然产物及其衍生物。他受聘为山东省科学院生物研究所(济南)特聘教授,与刘可春所长密切合作,建立人类疾病斑马鱼模型与药物筛选工程技术研究中心,致力于活性化合物的筛选与评价、药物作用机理以及创新药物以及安全性研究。
       2012年,樊台平应美国Science杂志之邀,作为发起人和主编,以The Art and Science of Traditional Medicine(传统医学的艺术与科学)为专题,于2014-2015年编辑并刊发了一系列中医药以及世界其他地区民族药物领域的前瞻性、战略性研究论文,获得了广泛关注与评述,入选2014年世界中医药十大新闻。
      2015年,他应邀于联合国总部联合国学术影响力论坛做全会主旨讲座,以Harnessing Natural Resources for a Better Tomorrow- Health and Healing Through Evidence-based Applications of Traditional Medicine(利用自然资源创造更美好的明天—通过传统医学的循证应用实现健康和康复)为题,运用中医药的优势和血管新生平台探讨传统医药的现状和未来,提升了中医药的国际地位及声誉;论坛期间,积极与其他会员国互动,共同实践世界卫生组织《2014-2023传统医药战略》,以为全人类的健康及医疗做出贡献。
      2017年,他应捷克卫生部之邀,筹办并主持国际传统中医药圆桌会议,促成捷克众议院通过中医药立法,并纳入其国家卫生保障体系。该历史性的突破与决定成为了中医药“一带一路”建设的先驱成果,并将辐射到其他中东欧国家及欧盟成员国;2017年,应华大基因农业之邀担任“药用植物4.0计划”欧洲地区协调员,并受聘为北京中医药大学「国家中医体质与治未病研究院」学术委员会委员。2018年入选温州市“海外精英引进计划”创新长期项目。荣获2018年改革开放40周年中医药文化传承特别贡献奖。
      2019年,樊台平荣获2019年度中华中医药学会岐黄国际奖,并受中国中医科学院黄璐琦院士及华大基因杨焕民院士聘为“中国药用植物大数据中心”委员。2020年受聘为美国植物药协会英国高级副总裁(https://www.botanicaldrug.org),以及中国食药品区块链专委会国际联盟联席主席。樊博士与深圳Authenmole分子态生物技术公司及浙江中医药大学合作,开发用于预防和治疗冠状病毒感染的优质草药茶。利用专利植物低温萃取高效分离集成技术(PLEESIT),从常见食用植物(如金银花、蒲公英、杏仁、生姜)和中草药(如鱼腥草、白术、黄芩、云芝中分离出纯植物化学物质)同时消除重金属和农药残留。利用已建立的中药方剂的高级分子中药提取物。2020年制备了4种预防和治疗新冠肺炎COVID-19疫情的标准化中药茶。两种配方已经成功地保护了一线医务人员,而另外两种配方在中国武汉的4家医院挽救了大量患者。于2020-2021年英国新冠疫情严峻之时,樊博士与分子态生物技术公司合作,捐赠抗疫包至英国中文教育促进会分发给华侨、华裔使用,并与罗马尼亚Vasile Goldis大学团队合作评估这一系列产品的临床疗效及安全性。
      2020年9月,樊博士成为英国48家集团俱乐部副会员Associate Member of The 48 Group Club。2021年6月,英国皇家文艺学会颁予樊教授Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts(FRSA)院士荣衔,以表彰他于血管生成和中医药方面的创新研究对健康和福祉领域做出的贡献。
      2022年11月,樊台平及其国际团队以“中药良关系核心效应物质系列关键辨识技术及药物智创实践”国际合作项目,荣获2022年世界中医药学会联合会国际贡献奖-科技进步奖“二等奖”。
      2023年4月,受华大基因创始人杨焕明院士之邀,主持第18届国际基因组学大会(张家界、北京、南京、温州)“基因组学与中医药”环节,并以“大数据时代中医药研发进展”讲座,倡议成立“中欧植物药研发中心”。
